W WWkDy! 0=== = : Minutes LAC Oversight Body Meeting Thursday, December 3, 2009 8:30 am BA 524 In attendance: Will Thomas, Vaughn Gehle, Corey Butler, Maria Brandt, Lyn Brodersen, Tom Williford Absent: Lori Baker, Linda Nelson The Committee agreed that Corey Butlers revised First-Year Seminar (FYS) Proposal and Form looked comprehensive and complete. Boxes for approval or disapproval of the proposal will be included in the next draft of the text. Brodersen suggested that the Committee assign a few representatives to work with Pat Carmody and advising to develop advising outcomes for the FYS as well. Brodersen also suggested that a generic, course-level rubric be developed to accompany the FYS for assessment purposes. All agreed that the FYS Proposal and Form, with the addition of boxes for approval or disapproval, be forwarded to the Curriculum Committee for review. Four LAC course proposals came before the Committee for review and recommendation to move on to the Curriculum Committee. CHEM 110 came forward to satisfy both the Natural Science and People and the Environment requirements. Butler moved and Brandt seconded to approve the respective proposals; the Committee voted unanimously to accept and forward CHEM 110 to Curriculum in both designations. PSYCH 101 was reviewed as a course to satisfy the History and the Social and Behavioral Sciences goal. Butler moved and Thomas seconded to approve the document. The Committee voted unanimously to accept and forward the proposal to Curriculum. HIST 242 and HIST 243 were brought forward as a package, with each course to count toward History and the Social and Behavioral Sciences. Butler moved and Brodersen seconded the motion to approve the courses and send both to the Curriculum Committee. The Committee concurred. The Committee then discussed the FYS and IDST 110: The University Experience. Brodersen asked whether the Committee thought that IDST 110 should/could be used as a course to substitute for the FYS, as provisionally-admitted students and athletes commonly are advised into this course during the first year of coursework. Brodersen then asked if it may be possible to run cohort-specific sections of the FYS, taught by those who normally teach IDST 110, if there were a common course outline and rubric, along with specialized training in critical thinking pedagogy/andragogy for MUSAAF personnel who might be considered to teach the class. The Committee discussed the proposal, and some members expressed that the Committee should further define the distinctions between the two courses. Brodersen volunteered to contact Linda Nelson for a course outline and sample syllabi to share with the Committee for further discussion. The Committee then moved to a discussion about the possibility of counting the 300-level EDU Human Relations as a course toward the Human Diversity LAC requirement, and the 400-level EDU Action Research courses as a substitute for an upper-level writing course or the Contemporary Issues Seminar in the LAC. Tom Williford asked whether students from other majors might be able to take these courses. Vaughn Gehle pointed out there may be confusion about students being required to take two separate courses to substitute for one course.. Brodersen volunteered to talk with Dan Kaiser to clarify whether the Human Relations course could count toward the Human Diversity requirement; apparently, this had been an issue for discussion among members of the original LAC Committee. Tom Williford asked if there would be a Minnesota Transfer Curriculum issue with accepting Human Relations as an LAC course since it is housed outside the College of Arts, Letters, and Sciences. There was also discussion about how World Languages fit into the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum, in terms of level and goal area(s). Brodersen indicated she would check parameters and requirements and communicate information about World Languages to the Committee. The Committee then discussed issues of overload and possible lightening of load to encourage faculty to teach the First-Year Seminar. Concerns emerged that adjunct faculty should not teach the FYS. Vaughn Gehle expressed concern that faculty would need incentives to teach the FYS in lieu of teaching within the major. Lyn Brodersen commented that this would, indeed, be an issue that administration would need to discuss, particularly as many tenured ALS faculty will be on sabbatical next year. Corey Butler then gave a brief overview of Augsburgs new, 15-credit LAC course that is team-taught by faculty. No grades are given in the course. The Minneapolis Star Tribune ran an article on this Augsburgs new approach on Sunday, November 30: HYPERLINK "http://www.startribune.com/local/76762617.html"http://www.startribune.com/local/76762617.html. Corey Butler asked if the LACOB had a firm deadline for this years catalog. Brodersen indicated she thought that would be sometime around mid-February; she volunteered to check with Pat Carmody and Deb Mitlyng, and to report back to the Committee. Gehle moved and Brandt seconded to adjourn the meeting at 9:55 am. The Committee voted unanimously to adjourn. The LAC Oversight Body will meet again on Thursday, December 10, 2009, at 8:30 am in BA 524.
